高校の頃は、生物部にいてイモリを使って尻尾や肢などが切れてもまた生えてくる再生という現象を調べていました。

その時から卵から生物の形ができてくることの不思議さに捉えられるようになりました。

原始的な計算機しかない時代に、知的な振る舞いをする人工知能についての将来像を描きました。そこで知的機械と人間が文字のやりとりをして相手が人間であると誤解させることができるかどうかで知性を判定する「チューリングテスト」を提案しています。

あまり知られていませんが晩年は、ひまわりの種の並び方、動物の皮膚の模様についてなど生物の問題に数学の視点から取り組み様々な仮説を立てています。

その中心的な考えである反応拡散方程式の基本的な考え方はそれほど難しくありません。

長らく理論上の仮説に過ぎませんでしたが、日本の近藤滋教授が実際にゼブラフィッシュの皮膚模様の変化がコンピューターのシミュレーションと一致することをしめして、生物発生の有力な理論として注目されました。


生物発生の分野では、場とかパターンとか波動とか一般的な科学の概念とはちょっと違った怪しげにみえる言葉が使われています。

科学はあらゆる現象を物と物の関係としてとらえることが基本になっていますが、発生は物ができる過程を扱っているので難しさと面白さがあるのだと思います。

私自身は数学が苦手ですが、数理的な理解が生物のなぞをとく起爆剤になると信じています。
